Fortune 50 executive. Scholar-practitioner. The person who wrote the playbook because no one else had.
Jelani Ellington didn't set out to write the definitive book on internal consulting. He set out to do the work — and spent two decades doing it across five of the largest companies on earth.
As an internal consultant and executive at Elevance Health, Capital One, Walmart, General Motors, and Ford, Jelani led strategic engagements spanning healthcare, financial services, retail, and automotive — with P&L responsibility reaching $11 billion. He saw firsthand what separates the internal consultants who become indispensable strategic assets from those who remain invisible corporate overhead.
The methodology he developed across those engagements became the Insider Advantage Method™ — a six-pillar framework now codified in The Internal Consultant and taught through courses, certification programs, and corporate workshops.
Today, Jelani serves as Chief Operating Officer of the General Building Contractors Association, a 135-year-old Philadelphia trade association, and runs Innovatus, a consulting firm providing fractional executive services, management consulting, executive coaching, and AI adoption training. He also serves as Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, teaching graduate courses in organizational design and strategic management.
